What is a NO KILL shelter?
A no kill shelter is a shelter which will not euthanize their animals in their care. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) estimates about 3-4 million pets are euthanized each year. No kill shelters aim to end euthanasia by increasing the demand for shelter dogs and cats, and reducing supply by reducing the number of animals born. Through increased spay and neuter clinics, the number of animals which end up in shelters goes down.
What does spay/neuter mean? Why should I do this?
Neutering refers to the removal of the reproductive organs in both male and female animals. Spaying refers specifically females and neutering usually refers to a male.
Lots of people believe that their pet's puppies or kittens would never become homeless shelter animals. The unfortunate truth is that every time the dog finds his way under the fence to visit the neighbor's female dog, or the indoor/outdoor cat comes back home pregnant, the result is a litter of dogs or cats. Even if they are placed into homes, there is a large possibility for them to end up in shelters once they become "hard to handle," lost, or even abused because they don't look cute anymore.
Many are surprised to learn that more than 3 million cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters across the U.S. every year. Spay and neuter is the only permanent, easy, 100-percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats.
